The EBCI Natural Resources Department (NRD) works with community members, EBCI programs, and contractors to ensure the Cherokee environment is protected and all ground-disturbing activities comply with Tribal and federal law. NRD oversight and regulatory actions are triggered through a variety of Tribal and federal actions including:
- Commercial, infrastructure, and multifamily site plan review process (Cherokee Code Chapter 47)
- Single-family house site review process (Cherokee Code Chapter 47)
- National Environmental Policy Act review initiated by federal permitting, signatory, or funding actions
NRD will provide a series of review and consultation functions with project managers and ultimately must issue a Tribal Environmental Permit prior to a project being initiated.
